I can’t believe it’s all over and done with. Big ups to everyone who: performed, volunteered as staff at any of the parties, danced, provided venues for parties and afterparties, rode in the bike parade, etc. etc. A huge thank you to Dylan and the Rad Summer interns for all the flyering, driving, equipment hauling and door-watching.

We’re moving April 10th’s Fancy Footwork party w/DJ Action Jackson and DJ Wushu to The Cinemat, located at the corner of 4th and Walnut. This unfortunately means we do have to charge a door cover of $5, but fortunately means RAD 5 IS NOW 100% ALL AGES!

Little update from what’s been going on for this party over in facebook-land.. we’re doing giveaways for people who’ve RSVP’ed as attending on the Flosstradamus event page, and just held our first trivia contest. The question:

The Floss guys work pretty closely with Kid Sister, which makes sense given she’s actually the older sister of Josh, 1/2 of Flosstradamus. Actually she made most of her first performances at Floss’s “Get Outta The Hood” parties. And given their musical backgrounds, it also only makes sense that one of her first tracks—again, produced by the Floss dudes—would be based on a ghetto house classic. What’s the name of the track and who originally wrote it?

A flurry of answers came in pretty quickly; the first correct answer coming from one Alex Cohen: Kid Sister’s Song “Let Me Bang” takes its name and vocal hook from DJ Deeon’s seminal ghetto housetrack of the same name. So two free tickets to Alex, congrats! More contests soon over on that facebook page, thanks everyone who entered!

Heyhey! Welcome to the Rad 5 page (and what will eventually become the new Rad Summer webpage). We’ve got a scant 23 days to go until the fest begins and—granted, mostly due to other events going on in town—Bloomington gets turned upside down. We’ll be adding plenty of music, video, and other goodies to this site in the coming days and weeks, so make sure you come back and see what’s new! Since bursting onto the scene in 2004, ACTION JACKSON has quickly established himself as a talented and versatile party dj. Specializing in genre bending mixes that span multiple styles of music, he is equally comfortable spinning hip-hop, baltimore club, electro, old school classics, dancehall, rock, and everything in between. In short, there’s not a crowd or party that he can’t rock. His sets have been known to turn water into wine, cure cancer, and make stiff legged white folks lean with it.

Totally Michael

The youngest of 7 siblings, Michael grew up in Cabot, Arkansas. After spending 20 years at home, Michael relocated to Bloomington, Indiana in January of 2005. After only one year of playing music, Michael embarked on his first tour that summer. Since then Totally Michael has shared the stage with the likes of Matt & Kim, Jens Lekman, Japanther, Dan Deacon, The Pharmacy and more. On stage, few have a presence like Totally Michael. With just a guitar and a laptop, his infectious blend of pop, punk, electro and dance has garnished attention coast to coast. Not since Prince have we seen an artist who can command a crowd with such energy and charisma. Whether he’s dividing an audience into teams and starting a dance off or doing his best Shakira interpretation, he just wants to make sure his music gets you pumped.

His biggest inspiration for starting Totally Michael was the Little Rock, Arkansas punk band, Soophie Nun Squad. Top 40 radio hits and bands like Matt and Kim, The Death Set and Best Fwends are also very influential. All of this comes out in both his records and live shows as his songs cover topics from choosing whether to be a member of the cheerleading squad or drill team to professing his love for another. Its no wonder Kim (from Matt and Kim) has openly admitted Totally Michael is her favorite act. Totally Michael is truly a one man operation with Michael recording, designing, creating, packaging, printing and maintaining all on his own. In the last 8 months he has played over 140 shows including a Studio B performance in New York City to over 800 people. In the future we can expect more touring and much more music with a new Totally Michael album arriving in the summer of 2008.
